Liposuction is an excellent way to get rid of unwanted body fat. Our bodies have a tendency to deposit fat into storage sites that become resistant to all forms of exercise and dieting. Liposuction is simply going into the fatty layers of those areas and suctioning out fat. There are different ways that this can be done. Ultrasonic and Tumescent are the two most popular and effective ways.
Ultrasonic: This technique is about liquefying the fat before it is removed. It is made possible by using high-pitched sound waves that essentially “melt” fat deposits into a liquid state. Under general anesthesia, Dr. Vela inserts the cannula (a thin, vacuum like tube) into the fat deposits. Then, a generator will transmit ultrasonic waves through the cannula. When the cannula touches the fat cells, they immediately liquefy and then are vacuumed out. This technique is great for areas that are very dense with fat deposits (harder to treat). Ultrasonic Liposuction also has the added advantage of tightening the skin, although compression garments are still strongly recommended. This technique can also be performed in conjunction with Tumescent Liposuction, which would emulsify the liquid fat and make its removal much easier.
Tumescent: Swollen or Firm. In the operating room, Dr. Vela injects a large volume of lidocaine (local anesthetic) and epinephrine (capillary constrictor to prevent surgical blood loss) into the fatty layer of your skin. This creates the fatty tissues to become swollen or firm, which is ideal for suctioning. Yes, this means that the Tumescent Liposuction technique may be done under local anesthesia. This is a safe and effective procedure that has been around for many years. Depending on the area of Liposuction, compression garments are strongly recommended.
Recovery time is quite short for Liposuction. Many patients return to work in a few days and are back to exercising in 12-14 days. Bruising, swelling, and pain are minimal and significant improvements are seen within two weeks. We do encourage the use of a Compression Garment. Compression Garments (also known as post-surgical garments) helps reduce swelling and are designed to increase blood circulation to the surgery site, which promotes faster healing.
Every body is different and I’m sure there are a lot of questions you have regarding which technique is right for you. During your consultation, Dr. Vela sits with you to discuss your wants and needs. After your conversation, a physical exam will provide Dr. Vela a better understanding of your desires. Photographs of similar patients will then offer you a better insight to what your results could be. When your questions for the Doctor are answered, one of our staff members will greet you and give you a precise cost of surgery quote. Our staff is trained to give you answers regarding scheduling, payment options and pre/post operative care.
During your consultation there is no pressure and it is not a sale. We do not offer “incentives” to book at your consultation, which could make for a rushed and persuaded decision. We want you to feel comfortable in our office, and that includes with both Dr. Vela and our staff.
